Bill was raised in Miami and educated at Emory University and Emory School of Law, where he graduated cum laude as Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Public Law. He began practice in Atlanta at Kilpatrick & Cody. From 1965 until 1983 he practiced law in Miami with Smathers & Thompson, where he was chairman of the real estate department. Since 1982, Bill has concentrated in all aspects of estate planning.

Bill is an expert in commercial and real estate law, and concentrates solely in estate planning and trust administration for high-net worth domestic and international clients.

He is an active member of the Florida Bar, the Estate Planning Council of Greater Miami and the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, and a member of the Vermont and Georgia Bars. He has been rated AV Preeminent by Martindale-Hubbell every year since 1982.
